My TAPPI Story: Naomi Gehling
The formation of organically bound chlorine (AOX) during ClO2 bleaching (D) can be almost totally suppressed by adding dimethylsulfoxyde (DMSO). It is shown that DMSO reacts with HOC1 generated in situ to give dimethylsulfone DMSO2 . 75% of C1O2 is converted into HOC1 which accounts for one third of the delignification achieved in a D stage. Consequently the reduction of AOX by adding DMSO will necessitate to increase the ClO2 charge to obtain the same efficiency of delignification. ClO2 splitting coupled with an addition of alkali to raise the pH to neutrality at the start of ClO2 phases leads to AOX reduction and does not affect delignification. The mechanism would be a better capture of HOCl by the chlorite anion initially formed when ClO2 reacts with lignin.
