Champion International Corporation has developed a process to recycle bleach filtrates from an ECF bleach plant to the kraft recovery process. The bleach filtrate recycle process leads the way to a closed bleaching operation, and is an attractive alternative to other proposed methods of closing a kraft mill bleach plant. A full-scale installation to demonstrate bleach filtrate recycle has been built, and is currently being started up on the pine fiberline at our Canton, North Carolina bleached kraft pulp mill. This paper gives an overview of the major technical and process considerations involved with designing, constructing and starting up the bleach filtrate recycle process.
