Dissolved Oxygen Kinetics of the Upper Neuse River Estuary, A Case Study, 1996 Environmental Conference Proceedings

A case study is presented which demonstrates the complexity of water quality management within the estuarine environment. The study focuses on dissolved oxygen within the upper estuary of the Neuse River, and demonstrates that natural phenomenon, such as tides, winds, saltwater stratification and algal productivity, dominate the dissolved oxygen balance. Water quality management through point source control will not assure compliance of water quality standards.
