With the increasing complexity and volume of environmental regulations, companies are having a difficult time identifying and “keeping up” with regulatory requirements, not to mention industry standards and good or best management practices. Facilities, both large and small, are struggling to find ways to manage environmental concerns. This has resulted in the widespread development of Environmental Management Systems (EMSs). EMSs are typically custom designed and vary from simple spreadsheets to written manuals to electronic on-line systems tied into process management controls. The depth and breadth of systems vary as facilities struggle with establishing baseline systems that meet their requirements or outside criteria such as the draft ISO 14001 Standards.
