My TAPPI Story: McKenna Goulette
This paper will summarize bubbling fluidized bed combustion technology for the combustion of pulp and paper mill sludge and residuals, and present economics for different options. The paper will evaluate properties of various pulp and paper mill sludge and residuals as they relate to combustion and energy recovery. Different combustion options will be presented, along with air pollution control technologies. Data will be presented on emissions control. The paper will discuss the key economic factors relevant to evaluating the economics of a sludge combustion project, including waste disposal and conventional fuel costs avoided, operation and maintenance expenses, consumables, and ash disposal. Specific case studies will be presented for existing and proposed projects. Proformas highlighting annual net operating savings and amortized disposal costs will be evaluated.
