My TAPPI Story: Naomi Gehling
Ozonation was investigated as a mean to reduce the pollution load of kraft pulp bleaching effluent. The first part of this work has consisted to measure the effect of the main experimental parameters and peroxide addition on the AOX content. In the best conditions, AOX removal could reach 90%. Attack of the molecular ozone on chlorophenols and organic acids would be the reason for this decrease. The second part deals with the effect of ozonation on COD, BOD5 , chlorophenolics and acute toxicity. The reduction in COD and BOD5 were insufficient to compete with biological treatment. However, small ozone doses could eliminate acute toxiciy and chlorophenolics content and increased biodegradability. Finally, the effect of pH on AOX was studied. AOX and chlorophenolics were reduced by an increase in pH. At the same time, toxicity decreased. Oxydation and dechlorination of catechol groups explain these results.
