Storm Water Quality Management at a Particleboard and Door Manufacturer, 1996 Environmental Conference Proceedings

The State of Wisconsin has established new storm water regulations (NR 216) to address the management of storm water quality. In Wisconsin, industrial storm water permittees are categorized by Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code with Tier I facilities representing heavy manufacturing with the greatest potential to impact storm water quality. The storm water permit requires Weyerhaeuser to develop and implement a Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) to address site activities that could impact storm water quality. Tier 1 facilities are required to develop a SWPPP to manage storm water quality. The SWPPP must include a storm water quality monitoring program, Best Management Practices (BMPs), an educationalprogram, and procedures for reviewing and updating the plan. The Weyerhaeuser facility located in Marshfield, Wisconsin, has been designated as a Tier 1 facility and required to develop a SWPPP. This paper will present a methodology, for preparing a SWPPP that includes a site reconnaissance, identification of activities that could potentially impact storm water quality, development of a site drainage plan, and evaluation of BMPs for potential treatment and storm water management. A BMP matrix is presented to be used to evaluate treatment and other BMP options.
