Recycling Treated Process Wastewater in Starch Adhesive at a Corrugated Packaging Plant, 1997 Environmental Conference Proceedings

Recycling process water to make starch is not a problem as long as you realize the main areas of concern and properly implement measures to control them. Wash-up water from the finishing and corrugator departments were treated, then recycled to make starch adhesive at Georgia-Pacific’s West Monroe plant. During the initial stages of this process, the areas of concern were found to be low pH levels and bacteria. Once these areas were identified and corrected, the plant was able to manufacture starch which performed well without creating bonding problems downstream. Implementing the recycling program also allowed the plant to achieve zero discharge of its process wastewater. Details of the physical/chemical treatment system used to remove solids and to control the pH of the process water before it was recycled, the effects of bacteria on the viscosity of starch, and the use of treated process water to make starch are discussed.
