My TAPPI Story: Rory Wolf
TAPPISAFE
High BOD and TSS loadings to wastewater discharges are often results of poor starch management practices in corrugated packaging plant. Personnel at the Georgia-Pacific’s Kansas City plant used the team approach to develop inexpensive and effective solutions for managing starch. Starch best management practices were developed to first of all, reduce as much as possible starch losses to the plant’s effluent. In addition, without the use of chemicals, the plant used basic sedimentation principles to redesign and optimize its sedimentation tank. After all measures had been implemented, measurements for BOD were reduced by 50% and measurements for TSS were reduced by 82%. Details of starch best management practices and the redesign of the sedimentation tank are discussed.
