My TAPPI Story: McKenna Goulette
Tenneco Packaging operates a containerboard mill in Valdosta, Georgia. the mill has evaluated alternatives for color removal. As part of the color removal program, pilot plant ozonation studies were conducted at several locations.
The results of this pilot study indicate that ozonation of Kraft Mill effluent can effectively remove color and is a viable alternative to traditional chemical precipitation removal technologies for color removal. The ozonation process can remove effluent color to below 50 PCU without the generation of sludge. This eliminates the need for a color treatment system solid redicuals management program as is typically required with precipitation methods. The study results indicate that the primary control parameters for color removal using ozone are dosage and contact time.
This paper presents the results of the pilot testing program.
