Review of Metals Emissons Data for Kraft Mill Sources, 1997 Environmental Conference Proceedings
Trace and heavy metals emissions data for kraft recovery furnaces, lime kilns and smelt dissolving tanks are reviewed. Most of the data originated from individual mill-conducted tests in response to the need for preparing state operating permits as a result of the revised Clean Air Act Amendments. Both statistically derived medians and arithmetic means of data sets are provided. The metals purged through air emissions are also compared with other kraft mill purges such as sludges, grits and dregs. Emissions are also compared with other combustion sources such as wood, coal, fuel oil and municipal solid waste. Metals emissions through the three kraft recovery operations are seen to be small both in comparison with other kraft mill solid waste purges and other potential mill combustion sources.
