Dike Containment Repair By Gravity Feed and Pressure Injection of Epoxy Grout to Prevent Fuel Oil Migration into the Subsurface at a Paper Recycling..., 1997 Environmental Conference Proceedings

Petroleum contamination was detected in soils beneath the floor of a concrete dike containment designed to prevent petroleum releases from aboveground fuel oil tanks. Small fuel oil releases had occurred infrequently over the years within the containment due to piping leaks and small overfills. We were retained by Southeast Paper Manufacturing Company of Dublin, Georgia to investigate the extent of petroleum migration and implement necessary repairs to the dike and floor to prevent further migration of fuel oil into the subsurface. The dike and floor repair was made without requiring the tanks be taken out of service. The repair procedure was as follows: First, the material inside the expansion joints, which consisted of a porous, fibre-board material used in typical 1970’s construction, was removed from joints around the dike wall, ring walls, and column supports and a flexible, petroleum resistant epoxy grout was gravity fed into the open joint.
