Improving Mill Power Reliability for Environmental Compliance and Increased Productivity, 1997 Environmental Conference Proceedings
The Jefferson Smurfit Fernandina Mill installed a computerized “Load Shed” System which prevents wastewater treatment system by-passes by eliminating total mill power loss. The Load Shed Project was initiated after the mill experienced power reliability problems, both external and internal, and faced regulatory concerns over wastewater excursions. The local utility can only support a small percentage of the mill energy requirements and, therefore, mill-generated power reliability had to improve to eliminate power outages. With the installation of the Load Shed System, the regulatory concerns were addressed, the mill power reliability improved and the mill productivity increased. The logical, programmable sequence of shedding electrical load assisted in keeping the mill on-line with minimal impact to the papermaking processes and no impact to the wastewater treatment system.
