New Wet Waste Dewatering Technology, 1997 Environmental Conference Proceedings

A new machine is available that generates enough dewatering force to discharge rejects material at over 50% consistency. The modem design of the hydraulic ram press takes advantage of significant new techniques in control logic and implementation technology that allow the machine to take rejects from either secondary fiber mills or virgin pulp mills and dewater them to very high solids. In the process, the material is compacted over four times, which means that landfill savings are significant, often offering a payback period of less than twelve months. Designed to meet or exceed subtitle D regulations on landfill solids, the press is able to deliver reliable, low cost performance on a wide variety of feed materials. Liquor recovery from pulp mill knots or consolidation of plastics rejects for resale are some of the more attractive applications of this new technology. This paper will present a review of subtitle D landfill requirements, contrasting them to typical operating parameters from paper mills, thus demonstrating the need that exists for new handling technology. Mill operating data from a variety of applications (as well as some laboratory dam on other dewatering applications) will be presented, along with the details of the new machine’s operating parameters. Cost savings analyses will be presented, documenting the results of the technology’s application.
