Evaluation of Ammonium PolyPhosphate and Waste Activated Sludge Extract as Nutrient Source for Activated Sludge System, 1997 Environmental Conference Proceedings

Ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and nutrient derived from biocracked waste activated sludge (WAS) were evaluated against phosphoric acid (PA) and ammonium salt using the nutrient uptake rates of activated sludge and growth rates of a reference microorganism. APP was found to be comparable to phosphoric acid and ammonia. The product was depolymerized completely within 100 minutes upon introduction to the reaction mixture. APP also generated a small cost reduction compared to PA. It was concluded that APP is a good source of nutrient suitable for effluent treatment. For the WAS extract, there was no discernible difference between the extracted phosphorus and PA. However, only a fraction of the extracted nitrogen was utilized. The nutrient value is less than expected to offset the higher incremental operating cost. This makes the biocracked WAS extract not economically attractive compared to APP.
