My TAPPI Story: Rory Wolf
TAPPISAFE
The aerated lagoon in the new Windsor mill has experienced suspended solids upsets since mill start-up. During these upsets, the mill also experienced occasional events of toxicity and high BOD5 discharge. Most of the outbreaks were caused by anaerobic activity in sludge deposits in the quiescent zone. The lagoon showed signs of overload with unusual behavior. The suspended solids were mainly filamentous biomass with 36% inorganic material. Extremely high MLSS levels that resemble that of an AST process were observed. The causes for such high MLSS remain unclear. High sludge yield was attributable to high operating temperature that seemingly promoted over-achievement in BOD removal. Dissolved oxygen deficiencies contributed to growth of filamentous organisms.
