Water Reclamation Operations in a Zero Effluent Mill, 1998 Environmental Conference Proceedings

McKinley Paper Company

A Grupo Industrial Durango Company

McKinley Paper Company, a 100% recycled linerboard mill, is presented with a unique manufacturing challenge. Located in the high desert of northwestern New Mexico, water is a valuable resource, not available in quantity. Likewise, there is not a suitable receiving body of water to discharge even a minimal amount of effluent. To meet this challenge, the water treatment system operates a completely closed process to reclaim all available water for reuse. General operation of the five stage water treatment system is described. Mill water contaminants must be maintained below critical levels to prevent machine corrosion and allow proper chemistries so as not to affect chemical usage and disrupt papermaking. Water quality results are characterized for the closed mill.
