VOC Emission Models: Tuning and Validation Using Data from an ECF Kraft Mill, 1998 Environmental Conference Proceedings

One task within the DOE Agenda 2020 VOC Project is to develop and test VOC emission models for washers, tank vents and oxygen deliginification blow tanks. The new models are incorporated in an existing simulator so filtrate concentrations and temperatures can be predicted.

This paper describes the tuning and validation of these new VOC emission models using fiberline methanol data collected at an ECF kraft mill. Nine air locations were sampled in triplicate by NCASI. Simultaneously 20 liquor samples were also collected in triplicate. These data provide a good benchmark for the new VOC emission models.

Application of the new models shows the benefit of reducing methanol in the decker showers.
