The anoxic selector effect was introduced in secondary effluent treatment to enhance control of the filamentous bulking that affects settling time. The selector effect, when added to sequential batch reactors (SBR) with fine bubble diffusers, increased the ALPHA (a) factor of the mixed liquor. It resulted in a higher oxygen-transfer rate in process water, which, when combined with the selector effect, mix intensification, and improved process control, significantly reduced the cost of SBR operation.
