The Pollution Prevention Partnership, or P3, is an innovative program first announced in 1993, involving 26 paper companies and 44 different facilities. The voluntary program represents a “new and better way” of doing business between the public and private sectors and is designed to find cost-effective means to reduce pollution. P3 encompasses air emissions, wastewater discharges and solid/hazardous waste reductions. As a nationally recognized program, P3 has motivated other groups to develop similar partnerships. Thomas H. Schmidt, president, Wisconsin Paper Council, and James Weinbauer, director of environmental affairs, Consolidated Papers, Inc. share their experiences and results from working on this commitment to continuous improvement.
