As companies meet the challenge of raising employee awareness of environmental issues and regulatory compliance, a new issue rises to the front: the impact of contractor activities and operations on the regulatory compliance status of your facility. While mills continue to utilize contract operations for maintenance, operations, plant expansion, or modifications, contractor operations are having an increasing impact on a facility’s regulatory compliance. As environmental staff deal with complicated issues that range from waste characterization and management under RCRA, to unauthorized discharges to a WWTS by contractors, they often feel overwhelmed and feel that the contractors are “uncontrollable.” By using well written contracts, and a program of planning, training, and inspections, a contractor’s impact your facility’s compliance status can be controlled and minimized.
