Environmental decision-making is typically very difficult. This is because of the uncertainties about the facility, current and future environmental regulations, decision alternatives, and the interests of different stakeholders. Processes and tools are available to improve environmental decision-making. These decision tools and processes, which have been used within many business operations for business planning, are now being applied to environmental decisions.
This paper discusses how environmental decision processes were improved and value provided to Weyerhaeuser at their Sycan site in Oregon. Site issues are outlined and discussed, and a specific decision problem presented to illustrate the methods and tools.
