My TAPPI Story: Rory Wolf
TAPPISAFE
For ECF bleached kraft pulp mill, reducing the pollution loads in the receiving waters means recycling the bleach plant effluents. The recycling needs to find kidneys for organic and inorganic compounds and the efficiency of bleaching stages depends on the qualities of used effluents. The aim of this work was to evaluate the adequate level of organic removal needed to allow the recycling of bleaching effluent and the keeping of acceptable bleaching stage efficiencies.
The technologies used as kidneys were membrane filtration and/or coagulation/flocculation. Results showed that the molecular size distribution of the carry-over had a great influence in the bleaching efficiency. A sustainable treatment of alkaline bleaching effluent is proposed to partially close cycle kraft pulp mill.
