The present paper describes a part of the research program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) under the Agenda 2020 for the pulp and paper industry for the development of VOC control technologies for the pulp and paper mills. In this study we are developing a VOC data base for emission prediction in Kraft mills. Quantitative data have been obtained. The results including three parts: (1) the development of rapid, accurate, and automated analytical techniques for the analysis of VOC contents and VLE behaviours in Kraft mill streams, (2) the quantification of VOC contents in Kraft mill streams, and (3) the characterization of the VLE behaviour in Kraft mill streams. The results indicate that VOC contents and behaviours vary significantly in Kraft mills depending on the mill operating conditions and processes involved. Individual analysis needs to be conducted for quantitative predictions.
