Because it is one of the three most energy intensive industries in the United States, the pulp and paper industry has kept detailed energy consumption records since 1972. These records, together with historical production statistics, allow the examination of the impacts of technological change on the industry’s energy usage and the corresponding emissions of greenhouse gases. This examination shows that the industry’s emissions of greenhouse gases, resulting from the consumption of fossil fuel have been essentially constant since 1975. The impact of significant technological changes on this achievement is shown, along with the probable future reductions in emissions resulting from the impact of Agenda 2020 and other emerging technological change. Finally, the importance of investment timing to the industry is reviewed.
