This work addresses the treatment of bleached pulp effluents in a kraft ECF mill in order to achieve suspended solids and color removal. A sequence of unit operations of dissolved-gas flotation/ultrafiltration is optimized. Dissolved-gas flotation is optimized both in terms of carrier gases, air and CO2 , and operating conditions, pressure and recirculation rate. The acidification ability of CO2 is used for colloid destabilization with minimization of chemical additives and enhancement of suspended solids removal. The removal of suspended solids, particularly colloidal matter, improves the ultrafiltration performance through the minimization of membrane fouling and makes possible the utilization of compact and more economic membrane configuration, spiral wound modules.
