International Paper’s Androscoggin mill has developed a predictive emission model (PEMS) for particulate, TRS, SO2 , NOx , and CO emissions from a lime kiln. This work was a cooperative effort with EPA, Maine Department of Environmental Protection, and the Town of Jay. The experimental design contained 60 operational conditions implemented over a four-week period. A modified Method 5 measured particulate emissions created by these conditions. Continuous emission monitors (CEMS) measured TRS, NO,, SO,, and CO. Computer and manual techniques collected operational kiln parameters during the study. Other data collected included meteorological information, lime quality measurements, and oil analysis. A neural statistical model correlated all these parameters to emissions. A PEMS is the product.
