The Buckeye Lumberton Corporation’s existing wastewater treatment facility (WWTF) located in Lumberton, North Carolina was evaluated to optimize the activated sludge process. The objectives of the study were to evaluate the performance of the WWTF in winter and summer months and recommend solution(s) to eliminate decreased treatment efficiencies to consistently meet the permit limits. Based on the results of the WWTF evaluation, it was determined that filamentous sludge bulking and low aeration basin temperature were the primary causes of decreased treatment efficiencies during the winter months. Bench-scale treatability studies were conducted with biological selectors to control filaments and to develop BOD removal rate constants. Based on the results of the treatability studies, winter and summer WWTF operating conditions were defined.
