Stand-Alone Biological Treatment of Kraft Mill Condensates- Pilot Plant Studies, 1998 Environmental Conference Proceedings

The MACT I component of the 1997 Cluster Rule may create situations under which it is desirable for a kraft mill to treat condensates in a stand-alone process. Depending on the application, the effluent from such a process may be reused within the mill or sewered, if it is treated to MACT I requirements. In order to evaluate the feasibility of implementing condensate biotreatment at a particular facility, information is needed to (a) serve as the basis for a preliminary cost estimate to establish the economic feasibility and (b) characterize the emissions (liquid, air, and sludge) from the process to determine if the process is compatible with mill operations. To develop the required information, aerobic and anaerobic pilot-plant systems were operated at a southern bleached kraft mill.
