In 1985 Procter & Gamble installed at their Mehoopany, Pennsylvania ammonia-base sulfite mill, the Rayonier/Katzen system for capture of SO2 from recovery boiler flue gas. With a design target that stack emissions be not more than 1200 ppm, the system actually achieved and maintained levels of less than 500 ppm (94% SO2 re-covery).
With indication of stricter requirements in the near future, studies made in 1995 indicated feasibility and equipment requirements to improve performance. Ongoing design and installation in 1996 has resulted in less than 200 ppm SO2 emissions (97.5% recovery). Reduction in volatile organic emissions (methanol) has also been achieved, as well as improved thermal energy recovery.
