As part of the 1997 shutdown of the Ketchikan Pulp Company mill in southeast Alaska, we evaluated past aerial deposition of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDDs/Fs) associated with emissions from the mill’s multifuel power boilers. Maximum offsite deposition was predicted by modeling to be less than 10 µg/m 2 of 2,3,7,8-TCDD toxic equivalent concentration (TEC) over the 43-year life of the mill. The predicted deposition was consistent with the PCDD/F mass in the surface soils that was estimated from measured soil concentrations (approximately 10–80 ng [TEC]/kg).
