With the installation of additional treatment facilities in the Canadian mills at the end of 1995, the amount of sludge generated significantly increased while its agricultural value greatly improved. Analysis have shown that, due to its agronomic characteristics, the sludge would be highly beneficial for the local agricultural sector as well as for other applications on forest land or for land reclamation. In order to quickly develop this alternative, research initiatives that were started a few years ago had to be expanded to ensure quality and to increase understanding of the various mechanisms involved in a northern climate. This paper will review the various research projects conducted to this day and provide an overview of the landspreading program.
