Simpson Benefits from Recovery Boiler Shutdown, 1999 Environmental Conference Proceedings
Matthew L. Hinck - Simpson Tacoma Kraft Company
Simpson Tacoma Kraft is an integrated 1280 tpd kraft mill located on Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. In 1995 the mill installed an OCC fiber processing facility to complement kraft digester operations. Gradually, kraft digester production decreased and the mill was ready to trial shutting down one of the mills two recovery boilers. By year end 1998 the mill shut down a recovery boiler. Initially mill production decreased by 10%, but through innovation and sound process management the mill has nearly restored production levels. Running with a single recovery boiler results in air emissions decreasing between 12% for SO2 and 88% for VOC’s while overall machine production has remained relatively unchanged. This improved performance in keeping with the mills tradition of operating well below regulatory compliance levels and reduces the dependence on kraft pulping.
