Closing the Loop - Reducing the Reliance on Fresh Water and Minimizing Drain Losses; Some New Developments, 1999 Environmental Conference Proceedings

Jamie Curley, Ben Jones & Professor Nicholas Wiseman

Department of Paper Science, UMIST - University of Manchester Institute of Science and

Technology

The motivations and benefits of reducing fresh water inputs to the paper making process are reviewed. The problems associated with increased system closure in a paper mill are also examined. A case study is presented of one mill, which aims to reduce the amount of process material lost to drain. This case study also discusses some of the management issues that surround such a project and introduces the idea of the Engineering Doctorate (Eng. D) scheme. Some details of specific technologies such as hydrodynamic separators and current researches into computational fluid dynamics and computer modelling are given.
