Multivariate Analysis of the Operation of a Sequential Biological Batch Reactor, 2002 Environmental Conference Proceedings

F. Bozet

A study was conducted on the operation of a set of 4 sequential biological batch reactors (SBR) used as a secondary effluent treatment system for the Kruger newsprint (TMP-deinked) mill located in Bromptonville (Québec) to gain process insight, identify key process variables and their interrelationships, and design operating strategies. The use of projection to latent structures (PLS) modeling allowed for the identification of 6 composite indicators that accounted for 53% of the total variation in the effluent characteristics observed over a 4-year period. The indicators or principal components are independent, linear combinations of the 167 measured incoming flow characteristics and process variables. They were used to identify areas of potential improvement for the SBR operation, both in terms of overall effluent quality variability, system robustness, and operating costs.
