TOC and BOD5 Correlations for Biodegradable Organic Matter in the Pulp & Paper Industry, 2002 Environmental Conference Proceedings
D. Gariepy and M. Turgeon
Different kinds of organic matter in the wastewater of pulp and paper can be measured by different methods: TOC, COD, and BOD5. BOD5 is still used to measure the concentration of biodegradable organic matter, but this method is known to have many interferences. It requires many days to get reliable results for industrial effluents. We suggest the measurement of TOC because this method is better and has many advantages. In particular it is justified when the correlation between BOD5 and TOC is good. The analysis results also show that sometimes the measurement of BOD5 is not related to the concentration of biodegradable organic matter while the measurement of TOC is related. A TMP paper mill application shows the same trend.
