Implementation of an Environmental Compliance Management System: Integration with Process Control Systems, 2002 Environmental Conference Proceedings

Implementation of an Environmental Compliance Management System is becoming essential with rapidly escalating data collection, analysis, record keeping, and reporting requirements. In order to implement these systems effectively, integration with a mill’s Process Control System is necessary. However, effective integration requires careful planning, an effective checkout plan, and a high degree of patience. This paper will present the results of integration with the process control systems at Smurfit-Stone’s Fernandina Beach facility, describing both data collection and generation of alarms back to the mill's distributive control systems. The paper will focus on the architectural design, lessons learned from advanced planning and how additional thought and planning would have benefited the process, development of an effective check out procedure, and improvements that can be made to improve this process.
