Insights Concerning the Potential of Mill Effluents to Affect Fish Reproduction, 2002 Environmental Conference Proceedings

For the past decade, there have been numerous reports that effluents from different types of mills have the potential to affect fish reproduction. In some cases, the reproductive effects were said to be caused by endocrine disruption, or effluent-related effects on the hormonal system. These reports have contributed to the overall issue of endocrine disruption in wildlife that has been one of the most rapidly emerging environmental issues of recent years. This paper reviews the issue of endocrine disruption and fish reproduction in relation to mill effluents and summarises current research activities with a particular focus on Canada.
