Regulation of Persistent Bioaccumulating Toxics Substances (PBTS) is of growing interest to state/provincial and federal governments in Canada, the U.S., and indeed throughout the world. Several initiatives are already in place; others are certain to follow. This paper examines programs currently in place and identifies issues important to the forest products industry as these programs gain added prominence. PBTS definitions and listing criteria, the various lists of substances currently identified as PBTS, the regulatory nature of identifiable programs seeking to limit or eliminate PBTS releases, and issues which surround these substances and programs are discussed.
