Primary Clarifier Optimization Study Methodology, 2003 Environmental Conference Proceedings

Kilogram for kilogram primary clarifiers remove more total suspended solids(TSS) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) for less operating money than any other treatment process in use today. Traditionally, the performance efficiency of primary clarifiers has been assessed based on the percent removal of the influent TSS and COD (or biochemical oxygen demand, BOD). The design and operating parameter most often cited as affecting performance the most is the surface overflow rate. This paper will show the flaws in using the traditional approach and present a more appropriate, yet practical, approach to assessing primary clarifier performance via a case study at a bleached market Kraft mill.
