Slocan Forest Products Ltd. – Taylor Pulp Division (Fibreco) land-applies the solid residual from their wastewater treatment plant on nearby farmlands in Taylor, BC. Since Fibreco’s wastewater treatment system also treats domestic sewage from the mill, a study was undertaken to determine if pathogenic organisms represented a risk in the land-application program. The study included two land-application methods: residual applied as a top-dress, and as an incorporated amendment. Both fresh and stockpiled residual were tested for pathogens (Fecal Coliforms, E.Coli., Enterococci and Salmonella), prior to applying them to land. Soils were tested for pathogens before and at 63, 163, and 420 days after residual had been applied.
