New Light Scattering Model for Simulating the Interaction Between Light and Paper, 2000 International Printing & Graphic Arts Conference Proceedings

Richard Hainzl, Richard Berglind, Måns Bjuggren, Marie-Claude Béland, Teresita Quinteros, Hjalmar Granberg, Lars Mattsson--A Monte Carlo simulation program was developed to simulate the light scattering properties of paper. The program takes into account the three-dimensional nature of the paper structure and treats the scattered light according to rules that govern each paper component separately. The bi-directional scattering distribution function of five test samples were simulated and compared to experimental results both in reflection and in transmission. The simulation program was also tested for fluorescent samples, gloss variation, and for printed surfaces. The program allows several detectors to be chosen where the simulation results can be analyzed in terms either of angular distributions or as a function of the x- position on the sample. Spectral properties can also be simulated.
