Johan C. Fröberg, Joakim Voltaire, Mikael Sundin, Fredrik Tiberg--Fountain solutions are known to affect the offset printing process in several ways. In the present study, the effects on the ink tack development after printing is studied. The Ink Surface Interaction Tester (ISIT) is used to follow the change in ink tack with time. Ink emulsions have been prepared of well-characterized fountain solutions and a mineral oil based offset ink. Two model papers were used in the study, one glossy and one matt. Their surface topography was measured using interferometric profilometry and atomic force microscopy, while the surface chemical compositions was studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It is argued that the main effect of emulsified fountain solution is a decreased ink film cohesion.
