Although ink ruboff from printed newspapers is largely an ink-related problem, there is still a newsprint contribution. Ruboff from the same newsprint calendered to different levels increased with calendering. For a wide range of newsprint machines, ruboff did not correlate with air leak roughness. However, ruboff increased with the amount of ink required to just cover the paper surface. For similar wood species ruboff also increased with the amount of surface fines (0.1 mm and smaller) and with smoothness measured in an optical contact device. It is concluded that, contrary to previously-published work, while surface fines may improve ink retention at the sheet surface, the presence of binder-free inks close to the surface apparently leads to easy removal as well.
