Full scale printing trials have been carried out on liner and corrugated board. The liner and corrugated board are printed in two different flexographic printing machines. All printing and process variables in the trials were kept as stable as possible. Only the paper samples should vary. Paper from different North European paper machines and producers were printed continuously over a short period of time. A thorough work has been done to quantify the print quality as seen by the human eye, and advanced statistical methods were used to analyze the results. The paper grades have also been tested in the laboratory regarding traditional and newer surface and printability tests. This paper presents results from these trials and tests. Print quality factors important to subjective evaluation of print quality are discussed as well as the laboratory measurements’ suitability to predict this assessment. The results from the subjective evaluation of print quality from the full scale flexographic printing trials on liner and corrugated board are promising.
