In this study the aim was to sort out the critical parameters that will govern the print quality for tine papers printed with ink jet printers. In order to do so five commercial tine paper samples were characterised with regard to pore structure, absorption (ink and water) and surface energy. They were all printed on a commercial ink jet printer and the print quality was evaluated both objectively with an image analyser and subjectively by all-pair comparison. Some simple calculations were also made with the data from the measurements in order to verify the results. The results show that the absorptive behaviour is very dependant on the pore structure of the paper, the chemical properties of the inks and the interaction in surface energy between the paper and the ink. The subjective evaluation showed that feathering is more detrimental to the print quality than mottling.
