The issue of hollow dots (the absence of ink in the center of a halftone dot) in the web offset printing process has drawn industry wide attention. A coalition of printers, paper companies and suppliers to both industries gathered to address this topic. Hollow dots have been a problem for the number 3 & 4 coated grade lines only. This work illustrates how effective the paper and printing industries can be by working together to both define the mechanism of hollow dots and to suggest test procedures to predict and diagnose hollow dot tendencies.
