This investigation concerns the evaluation of printability of the kenaf newsprint. The newsprints for printing were made using a laboratory fourdrinier machine. A comparison of standard newsprint with kenaf newsprints primarily with respect to pick resistance, print density and print-through was made. The printing was done in the IGT AIC2-5 printability tester with the standard news ink. The results have shown that the kenaf CMP newsprint has a higher inking efficiency than the wood newsprint. Increasing the chemical application in the pulping increased paper surface strength and Y-value but lowered printing opacity. Through controlling chemical application, a comparable surface strength and print through with wood newsprint are obtained for kenaf CMP newsprint.
