Gerardo A. Lopez--Layered silicates can be incorporated into high gas barrier resins improve performance. The use of organically modified montmorillonite clays (nanoclays) to improve physical properties of key resins has been a technology of future promise with little commercial activity in the present. This paper will introduce the technology and demonstrate its commercial viability. We’ll explore some of the geology associated with selecting a nanoclay and review nanocomposite processing and surface chemistry. Finally, we’ll discuss the mechanism for barrier improvement.
