Benefits and Performance Mechanism of Fine, Treated Calcium Carbonate in Blown Polyethylene Films, 2000 Polymers, Laminations & Coatings Conference Proceedings

John L. H. Batiste, Lane G. Shaw, Robert R. Ballard --Fine-ground, surface-treated calcium carbonate is a useful performance additive in the extrusion of blown films. This paper describes the preparation of the 75% concentrates used for the let-downs and the cost / performance benefits obtained from the use of calcium carbonates in blown film applications. Calcium carbonate loadings up to 25% in HMW HDPE and up to 35% in LLDPE provide dramatic rate improvements in film linear output as well as critical physical properties. In addition, a mechanism which explains the scientific principles behind the physical property improvements is presented.
